I absolutely zipped through this novel which was supposed to be strictly a post-workout cool down read but ended up as a Main Book despite having read it several times before. Peter finds the situation very complicated. It was a glorious bath. The trouble began at the family estate in Yorkshire, where Gerald was hunting with the man soon to be his brother-in-law, Captain Denis Cathcart. In America, a lawyer can get in big trouble for knowingly allowing his client to perjure himself on the witness stand.
Wimsey investigates several false leads. Apparently, however, it's just fine to do that in England. I felt Sayers was still developing her craft, but already we see the development of the characters of Lord Peter, Bunter, and Parker, and their relationships. Bunter, his confidential man and assistant sleuth, had nobly sacrificed his civilised habits, had let his master go dirty and even unshaven, and had turned his faithful camera from the recording of finger-prints to that of craggy scenery.
But traveling through Paris, he receives a shock that jolts him back to reality. The intellectual snobbery of printing of a whole letter in French fortunately with a translation!
